Windows Laptop (Surface Connect) Charging Flickering On and Off or Not Staying Charged

Quick summary

A charging icon that flickers between "charging" and "not charging," or a Surface that loses charge even while plugged in, usually comes down to one of: dirty contact pins on the Surface Connect connector, a charger that isn't powerful enough for what the device is doing at that moment, or — easy to miss — both the Surface Connect charger and a USB-C charger being plugged in at once, which Windows/Surface firmware doesn't handle as "extra power," just a confusing handoff.

Step-by-step fix

1. Check the LED on the Surface Connect charger

The small LED near the magnetic connector should be lit solidly white when it's properly connected and receiving power. No light at all, or a light that flickers as you move the cable, points to a connection or cable problem rather than a battery or software issue.

2. Clean the connector pins

Debris and oxidation on the small gold contact pins is one of the most common causes of intermittent charging on Surface Connect specifically, since it's a physical pin-to-pin contact rather than a fully sealed connector like USB-C.

Unplug the power supply from the wall first.

Gently rub the pins on the connector with a standard pencil eraser, back and forth, to remove built-up residue.

Follow up with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Let the pins air-dry completely before reconnecting.

3. Reseat the connector fully

The Surface Connect plug is magnetic and reversible — it can be inserted either way round. Remove it completely, wait a few seconds, and reinsert it, listening/feeling for it seating flush with an audible or tactile click, then confirm the LED lights up.

4. Never mix Surface Connect and USB-C charging at the same time

If both a Surface Connect charger and a USB-C charger are plugged in simultaneously, the device draws power only from the Surface Connect charger — the USB-C connection doesn't add anything, and having both connected has been linked to confusing charging-state behaviour for some users. If you've been using both at once (for example, Surface Connect for power and a USB-C hub for peripherals that also happens to be delivering power), unplug the USB-C charging source and test with Surface Connect alone.

5. If using USB-C charging, confirm the charger is powerful enough

Not every USB-C charger delivers enough wattage to properly charge a Surface, and an underpowered charger can cause the device to appear to charge and discharge in a loop under normal use (drawing more power than the charger supplies while active, then "catching up" when idle — which looks like flickering). Use a genuine USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger rated for your specific Surface model's wattage requirement, not a basic USB-A-to-USB-C cable and a phone charger.

6. Try a different power outlet and cable

Rule out the wall socket and cable individually — plug the same charger into a different outlet, and if you have access to a second known-good Surface Connect or USB-C cable, swap it in to isolate whether the fault is the cable, the charger, or the Surface itself.

7. Reset the battery driver (Windows-side fix)

If cleaning and reseating don't help, a corrupted battery driver can cause exactly this kind of flickering charge state:

Right-click the Start menu → Device Manager.

Expand Batteries.

Right-click each entry listed (commonly "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery") and choose Uninstall device.

Restart the Surface — Windows will automatically reinstall the battery drivers on boot.

⚠️ Do not use this step on Surface Pro X — Microsoft specifically warns this can require a full system reset on that model to restore drivers properly.

Still not working?

If the LED lights correctly, the pins are clean, you've ruled out mixing charging sources, and a different outlet/cable doesn't help, this points to a hardware fault in the charging port or the battery itself — book a check with Microsoft Support or an authorised repair provider rather than continuing to troubleshoot at home.
