MacBook Charging Flickering On and Off or Not Staying Charged (MagSafe 3 and USB-C)
Quick summary
A MagSafe or USB-C charging icon that flickers, or a MacBook that loses charge despite being plugged in, is almost always one of: debris in the MagSafe port blocking a clean magnetic connection, a charger or cable that isn't delivering enough power for what the Mac is doing, or — easy to overlook — both MagSafe and a USB-C charger connected at the same time, which Apple explicitly says doesn't add power and can create confusing charging-state behaviour.
(MacBook Air has had MagSafe 3 since the M2 redesign in 2022; MacBook Pro has had it since the M1 Pro / Max redesign in 2021. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is the one exception without it.)
What the MagSafe LED is telling you
The small light on the MagSafe 3 connector glows amber while charging (or while charging is intentionally on hold, for example due to Optimised Battery Charging), and turns green once fully charged. If it flashes amber repeatedly rather than glowing steadily, Apple's own guidance treats that as a sign of an actual charging issue, not normal behaviour.
Step-by-step fix
1. Check the basics first
Confirm the wall outlet works (test it with another device), and that you're using the correct-wattage adapter for your specific MacBook model — an old, lower-wattage adapter kept from a previous Mac can cause slow or unstable charging on a more power-hungry current model.
2. If the adapter stopped working after unplugging, wait before reconnecting
Apple's own guidance notes that if a MagSafe adapter seems to stop working right after being unplugged, waiting about 60 seconds before reconnecting can resolve it — this is attributed to brief line-noise interference rather than a fault.
3. Clean the MagSafe port and connector
This is the single most common cause of flickering/intermittent MagSafe charging, since dust and pocket lint can sit in the port and prevent a clean magnetic seal.
Unplug the cable from both the Mac and the wall.
Wipe the MagSafe 3 port on the Mac and the connector tip with a dry, lint-free cloth.
Make sure both are completely dry and visibly free of debris before reconnecting.
Also check the USB-C ends of the cable and power adapter for debris, if you're using the USB-C-to-MagSafe cable.
4. Restart the Mac, then reconnect
After cleaning, restart before plugging back in — this clears any confused power-management state that built up while the connection was unreliable.
5. Never rely on both MagSafe and USB-C at once expecting extra power
Apple is explicit that a MacBook charges from only one port at a time — whichever source is providing the most power — and connecting a charger to more than one port at once, MagSafe or USB-C, does not charge the Mac any faster. If you've got MagSafe plugged in for charging and a USB-C dock also connected that happens to supply power, that's not adding capacity, and in some reported cases the handoff between sources has been linked to inconsistent charging behavior. Try charging from a single source at a time to simplify troubleshooting.
6. Test with a different cable
If you have access to a second known-good MagSafe 3 cable or USB-C cable, swap it in. A cable that's frayed or damaged near either end — especially near the MagSafe connector itself, which flexes the most — is a common, easy-to-miss cause that cleaning won't fix.
7. If charging via USB-C instead of MagSafe
Confirm the charger is a genuine USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at or above your MacBook's required wattage, plugged into one of the Mac's charging-capable USB-C/Thunderbolt ports (not, for example, a USB-C port on an unpowered hub that can't actually deliver power upstream).
Still not working?
If you've cleaned the port, confirmed the wattage, tried a different cable, and charged from a single source at a time, and the LED still flashes amber or the battery percentage still flickers/drops while connected, that points to a genuine hardware fault in the battery, logic board, or charging circuitry — book a check with Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
